Barvas Free Church, is part of the rural community of Barvas, located on the west side of the Isle of Lewis, in the Western Isles. The parish covers around eight villages stretching from Bragar to Borve, with a population of a few hundred people. As with every parish, our people are what make it; and the people of Barvas have many spiritual and social needs which seek to be met by our local Church.
The purpose of Barvas Free Church is to bring glory to God, by worshipping Him each Lord’s Day (11am and 6pm), and proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our community in a clear and relevant manner. As a congregation, we meet for worship every Lord’s Day with an average of 70 – 90 people in attendance. During the morning service, we have a Sunday school for children of school age, and a crèche for toddlers and babies. We meet regularly for fellowship after the evening service, both as a congregation and as youth. During the week, we meet for Prayer & Bible Study on Wednesday evenings and Little Rainbows Toddler Group on Thursday mornings. See our Calendar for more details.
As a congregation part of the Free Church of Scotland, we have always had a high view of Worship and Preaching. All our doctrine and practice can be found in the Westminster Confession of Faith. Furthermore, we are a Presbyterian Ddenomination part of the Free Church of Scotland, consisting of over 100 congregations. For more information you can access the website of our denomination by clicking here.
In Barvas Free Church we sing from a metrical version of the Book of Psalms, without musical accompaniment. Based upon the Reformation principle of Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone), we believe that the Word of God is sufficient for worshiping God. However, some churches within our denomination have opted for singing Hymns with musical accompaniment.
As a Presbyterian denomination, we believe that our pastor, is one elder among a group of elders. Our pastor is a teaching elder, whereas the other elders are ruling elders who attend to the spiritual needs of our congregation. Our current pastor is called Murdo M. Campbell. Murdo comes from the Isle of Lewis and is married to Alison. They have three children: David, Finlay & Daniel.
Our heart’s desire as a congregation is that God would be glorified. We believe that our primary purpose as a congregation is to exalt the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and seek to glorify Him in all that we do. We pray that the Christians in our congregation would be built up in their faith through the preaching and teaching of God’s Word. In turn, our prayer is that we would all be faithful witnesses for the Lord in our community, and that more people would come to know Jesus as the only Saviour of sinners.
It would be our pleasure to welcome you along to any of our services or activities. We hope and pray that you will feel at home with us and enjoy being with us as a congregation.
